More and more money is being spent on players in the Absa Premiership every year, but who has the most expensive players in the league?
Take a look at the Rand value of South Africa's 13 most expensive in the gallery above!
Using the German website, Transfermarkt.com, Soccer Laduma took a look at South Africa’s top-flight to see which players have the greatest total market value at present, and it may come as a surprise to see where the first Orlando Pirates player sits.
Million Pound Men…
There are currently just six players in the Absa Premiership that have a market value of over £1m according to Transfermarkt, and all of them play for either Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns or Bidvest Wits.
Khama Billiat is currently the highest valued player at £1.8m, followed by Andile Jali at £1.17m, while three others – Itumeleng Khune, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Thapelo Morena – are just behind them at R1.13m currently.
There are several others at the aforementioned clubs as well as SuperSport United that find themselves just under the £1m mark at £900k, and further down the line, you see the emergence of players at Polokwane City, Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.
While the gallery above takes a look at the 13 most expensive players in the country at present, Pirates’ first mention in the full list is Innocent Maela, Vincent Pule, Justin Shonga and Thembinkosi Lorch in the mid-20s placed at R12.2m.
After them, the next Buccaneer on the list is Musa Nyatama in 51st place with a market value of R10.6m, then further down the list, you have the likes of Xola Mlambo, Augustine Mulenga and Happy Jele at R9.7m.
Goalkeepers Up There!
Interestingly, four of the 13 players with the highest value according to Transfermarkt are goalkeepers, a position not usually attributed with big money sales.
As previously mentioned, Itumeleng Khune is the highest valued goalkeeper, although the likes of Denis Onyango, Darren Keet and Ronwen Williams are not too far behind him on £900k.
Which player do you think deserves to be the most expensive in South Africa?
