Of the 11 most expensive players under the age of 23 in South Africa right now, just two of them are players who have been brought in from outside the country, and they both happen to be playing for the same team.
Justin Shonga (€750k) and Marshall Munetsi (€450k) from Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively are the only foreign players to make the top 11, and their value could well rise if they go on to help the Buccaneers clinch the Absa Premiership title this year.
Outside The ‘Big Three’…
While Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates are known as South Africa’s ‘Big Three’, five of the most valuable players – according to Transfermarkt – are playing for other clubs that are judged to be ‘smaller’ in the Mzansi football scene.
The player with the highest market value in the league is actually playing for bottom-of-the-table Maritzburg United, with young Siphesihle Ndlovu having a current value of (€800k), while you have to go down to 10th and 11th place respectively to find Chiefs’ most valuable youngsters – Siyabonga Ngezana (€350k) and Ryan Moon (€300k).
Which player do you think deserves to be the most expensive in South Africa?
