The future of Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, Steve Komphela, remains unknown as he reaches the end of his contract, but some players could benefit from his departure.
Take a look at some Chiefs/Komphela stats in the gallery above
Komphela has stuck to a relatively tried and tested side this season, with only nine players having played over 1000 minutes in the Absa Premiership throughout the course of the campaign.
The 50-year-old will see his three-year contract at Naturena expire at the end of the 2017/18 season, and with no trophies to his name since his arrival, Komphela’s time at the club could well be up unless they manage to clinch the Nedbank Cup trophy.
Players such as Daniel Cardoso, Philani Zulu, Joseph Molangoane and Siyabonga Ngezana have all become mainstays at the club this season, but which member of the side could be given a fresh start if a new head coach comes in to start from scratch.
The 28-year-old has started just 10 games in the league this season having fallen down the pecking order behind the likes of Cardoso and Teenage Hadebe, and with Chiefs’ defensive record looking good it doesn’t seem like Komphela has much of an intention to change things around.
After playing all but five games in the Absa Premiership in 2016/17, Gordinho was sent out on loan in a shock move back in January. He will want to try and get back in the side when he returns from Bloemfontein Celtic next season.
In over a season and a half at Chiefs, the 26-year-old has been given just four starts in all competitions by Komphela, with the current head coach clearly not a fan of the former Siwelele midfielder. A new coach would give him a clean slate.
Jayiya joined from Cape Town City at the start of the season but has played less than 500 minutes as Komphela opted to use other attackers over him. He’ll be itching for his first Amakhosi goal, but he’ll have to wait for it at this rate.
The 28-year-old defender hasn’t played a single game in the league or cup for Chiefs this season and has only 16 appearances in total since his move from SuperSport United. Komphela doesn’t seem to have any intention of moving Zulu out from that left wingback position.
Despite being promoted to the first team and recently turning 22, Bunting hasn’t even gotten on the bench for the Glamour Boys under Komphela. Chiefs have one of the worst attacking rates in the league, but Bunting is continually left in the stands.
Do you think Komphela should stay or go?
