Foreign Situation Explained For New Amakhosi Signing

New Kaizer Chiefs signing, Virgil Vries, may be a Namibian international, but the shot-stopper should be registered as a local for the Amakhosi in the upcoming season.
Vries, who was spotted at Naturena on Monday morning, was confirmed as the club’s latest signing later that afternoon, with the former Baroka man penning a three-year deal at the club.

Chiefs signed the 29-year-old as a free agent following his release from Bakgaga recently and is likely to be the second-choice goalkeeper behind their number one, Itumeleng Khune.
There had been questions asked regarding Vries’ place as a foreigner within the Amakhosi’s ranks giving that they don’t have many spots left, however, he was registered as a local for both of his two former clubs – Maritzburg United and Baroka – suggesting that it will be the same situation now for him with the Glamour Boys.
Chiefs currently have Gustavo Paez, Leonardo Castro and Teenage Hadebe on their books as foreigners, with Willard Katsande and Khama Billiat both having permanent residence in the country.
If, as expected, Vries is registered as a local for the new season, then the club still have two spots left to play with for their foreign quota, however Andriamirado Andrianarimanana will be taking one of those, leaving them free to bring in a one more non-South African player to try and help end their trophy drought.
