Vasco Enhance Their Portuguese Links

Vasco da Gama, who have the second worst goal-scoring record in the National First Division, are on the brink of signing a Portuguese-born striker, Jose Alberto.
The 21-year-old, previously on the books of top-flight AEL Limassol (Cypress) and second-tier Sport Clube Beira-Mar (Portugal) enjoyed his first training session at Parow Park this week after being spotted by the club’s owner, Mario Ferreira.
“This is my first time in South Africa,” he told Soccer Laduma. “I’m here to score goals but have not signed a contract yet, am just waiting for Mr Ferreira to arrive.
The tall player looked impressive under the watchful eye of former Moroka Swallows’ star striker and Ajax Youth Development coach, Noel Cousins.
He’s been brought to Vasco by club director, Ashley Kotzin in order to not only assist during the absence of incumbent, Tony da Nobrega (currently in Europe), but to also help hone the men responsible for netting.
“I was quite impressed,” said Cousins. “It looks like Alberto’s finishing is better that his mobility so when he’s fit and starts getting himself about, things should improve. He just needs a bit of time.”
Vasco face Ajax Cape Town on Saturday when the youngster will be given another opportunity to shine.
