Vasco Confirm Signings
Vasco da Gama have snapped up ex-Orlando Pirates left back, Sibusiso Mxoyana, but the U23 rule has meant that a number of overage players, who have been training in the hope of getting National First Division contracts at the Parow club, have been left disappointed.
The 24-year-old former South African junior international has penned a permanent deal, while there were also smiles on the faces of striker, Joseph Lekata (FC Cape Town), winger Tshowana Mokonyana (Baroka FC) and midfielder, Tumelo Mopedi (Mpumalanga Black Aces).
Vasco head coach, Tony de Nobrega, confirmed the new signings, but said a few other experienced men would have been added to his squad had the U23 rule not remained the same as last season.
“We thought clubs were going to be able to use of less than five youngsters,” he told Soccer Laduma.
“But that’s not the case, so we couldn’t sign guys like goalkeeper, Noel Yobou (Sivutsa Stars) and Itumeleng Duiker (Bloemfontein Celtic). I just wish we’d been told earlier about the U23 rule details. It’s not fair on anyone, especially the players.”
Former Milano United and Jomo Cosmos striker, Siyabulela Khali, also looked as if he might not make the cut, although he was seen frantically talking to Vasco assistant coach, Keenin Lesch.
