University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) have been crowned as the 2013 Varsity Football champions, in the competition’s inaugural season.
The Tuks boys defeated Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) 4-1 on Monday night at the LC de Villiers Sports Grounds, in front of a vocal and partisan crowd. The home team dominated the proceedings, where they created more chances in their victory.
Lawrence Ntswane broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, putting Up-Tuks into the lead with a header, after latching onto a Mbongeni Masilela cross. The home team continued to press and doubled their lead on the brink of the half-time, through Claudio Barreiro.
Masilela scored the first of his two goals in the 72nd minute, making it 3-0 to the home team. Bradley Peterson netted a consolation goal for NMMU six minutes later, before Masilela completed his brace to make it 4-1.
Jarryd van den Berg of UP-Tuks secured the Man of the Match award, while Thabo Mnyamane of NWU-Mafikeng was named as the Player of the Series.
Niven Kops of NMMU received the Samsung Super Strike award, with Tristyn Coetsee the recipient of the Debonairs Dynamite Goalie award.
