The news of the passing of Phakathi shocked the local football fraternity when it broke on the weekend, following his death in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday morning.

The former midfielder, who had also turned out for Golden Arrows in his professional career, was the head coach of Umvoti FC in the ABC Motsepe League at the time of his passing.

Pirates have joined many in the football fraternity in sending condolences to the Phakathi family, during this time of grieving.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing away of former player Bheka Phakathi. Phakathi, who played for the Mighty Buccaneers between 2002 and 2005, was coaching ABC Motsepe outfit Mvithi at the time of his passing. A team he had led to the Playoffs after an amazing season in the KZN stream.

“On behalf of the entire Orlando Pirates family we would like to convey our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Phakathi family and supplicate that God provides comfort in this time of pain,” Bucs wrote on their official website.

Soccer Laduma send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late football star.

Isitya esihle , asidleli! RIP Mr Bheki Phakathi. You ran your race, entertained us with your skills. You developed our youth through sport, well done. You made your family name big, promoted the game we love. We will miss you, till we meet again. May your family, friends and all soccer loving people make peace with your passing.
