Another top international goalkeeper has signed a deal with a club in the Absa Premiership for the upcoming 2019/20 season.
Having seen the team fighting against relegation for the better part of last season, Black Leopards have continued with their signing spree ahead of the new season by adding Guinea-Bissau national football team goalkeeper Jonas Asvendo Mendes to their roster.
Mendes has been Guinea Bissau’s Player of the Season for five years in succession. The 29-year-old can also play as a striker.
“Black Leopards FC welcome Jonas Asvendo Mendes. He comes with a lot of experience from Portugal and Guinea Bissau. The Board and Management trust that his arrival at Black Leopards will strengthen the defence of the team,” Leopards’ spokesperson Berry Ramunenyiwa confirmed in a statement.
Mendes has been playing his club football as a professional in Portugal for over decade now. His last club there was Académico de Viseu, having joined them in 2017 from another Portuguese outfit SC Salgueiros.
Some of the international goalkeepers that have joined Mzansi’s top-flight clubs for the new season include French keeper Joris Delle, who has been signed by Orlando Pirates, as well as Dutch goalkeeper Boy de Jong at Stellenbosch FC.
