Tyson Disappointed With Trophyless Season
Bidvest Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo has summed up the team’s lack of silverware this past season, believing that injury troubles for key squad members at crucial moments proved decisive.
Despite missing out on claiming the Absa Premiership title, which was won by Mamelodi Sundowns, the Clever Boys finished in second spot, their highest-ever finish in top-flight football, and also qualified for the CAF Champions League for the upcoming campaign.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Bafana Bafana full back expressed their displeasure in not achieving their targets when all looked to be falling in place.
“We were on track at one point in the season and only four points behind Sundowns, the squad was riddled with injuries, Phakamani, James, Papy and even myself. It definitely affects the squad when your key players are injured. As a team, we are disappointed. We knew we were a few points behind the number one spot. It was up to Mamelodi Sundowns to derail and Bidvest Wits wanted to make it interesting until the end. So there is definitely disappointment all round in the camp.”
Even though he was backed by head coach Gavin Hunt and the club CEO Jose Ferreira, Hlatshwayo still feels if he had stayed injury-free, things would have turned out differently.
“Coach Gavin and Jose told me that I should not be hard on myself but of course, I take not lifting a trophy personally. I got injured at a very crucial time in the season. I personally feel that I was absent when the team needed me the most. As much as any player in the team I really, really wanted to win the league and lift a trophy. As a team, we wanted to push Mamelodi Sundowns to the end and we lost that momentum.”
The former Ajax Cape Town defender has already shifted his focus to the 2016/17 campaign, outlining their targets for what will be a demanding term.
“The only thing we have to do now in the new season is to focus on winning and taking the number one spot. We need to win cups and if we start well in the MTN8, the team will most definitely have a good season," Tyson concluded.
