Why Chiefs Must Keep Musona

With Knowledge Musona's future at Kaizer Chiefs still uncertain, it remains to be seen how the club would cope without him if he didn't return in the 2014/15 campaign.

The Zimbabwean star has made no secret of his desire to try and resurrect his career in Germany's Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, however Chiefs' Team Manager, Bobby Motaung, is hopeful of still securing another loan for the star to return to the club.

With that said, an argument could be made that when Chiefs won the double in 2012/13, Musona's presence wasn't needed as Bernard Parker, Kingston Nkhatha and Lehlohonolo Majoro (now at Orlando Pirates) did the business upfront.

With a proven goalscorer like Katlego Mphela now seemingly taking Majoro's role in the squad, it could be that the Amakhosi already have enough in reserve were he not to come back.

Nonetheless, it's difficult not to consider Musona an elite performer in his position in the PSL. We looked at our exclusive Soccer Laduma stats, powered by Prozone, to examine reasons why Chiefs must keep Musona.

Firstly, he scored 16 goals in all competitions to finish as the club's leading scorer - an achievement he managed in his last spell at Naturena in 2010/11. It appears his pedigree as a proven goalscorer is without question. This is like gold especially when it comes to under-par strike-rates generally seen in Mzansi's top flight.

It's unsurprising he has found the net so regularly - Musona averaged the second highest amount of shots attempted in the recently-concluded season. He was also in the top four amongst strikers when it comes to final third and penalty area entries.

This shows that the Norton-born hitman is always going for the opposition's throat. His high goal tally also indicates he has the quality to match his appetite for work in the heavily-defended areas around the opposition's final third.

Furthermore, all Musona's numbers suggest he is a premium performer as a forward in South Africa. So highly-rated he is in the local game, it came as no surprise to many when Mamelodi Sundowns tried to wield their substantial financial muscle in a bid to secure his services.

It later transpired that the Zimbabwe international ruled out any move to Chloorkop in the foreseeable future. In conclusion, there seems to be plenty of good reasons why Chiefs must keep Musona ahead of the upcoming season.

His incredible numbers show he is arguably one of the best attacking players in the entire Absa Premiership at the moment. For any team to lose out on such a rich talent would cause a deficit, including a huge club like Chiefs.

The Siya crew will closely monitor whether Chiefs' management will be able to bring him back next year. Watch this space!

Have your say - Is Knowledge Musona absolutely crucial to Chiefs?
