Crunch Time: Tinkler’s NFD Fear…
It’s crunch time in the Premier Soccer League play-offs this week, and Eric Tinkler has explained why he’s fearful, with his Absa Premiership side facing National First Division opposition.
Tinkler managed to pull off a minor miracle by seeing Maritzburg United climb off the bottom of the table with a 1-1 draw against Baroka on the final day of the season, however they now face the prospect of going up against two in-form NFD sides eager to land promotion into the top-flight.
The Team of Choice face Royal Eagles on Sunday afternoon – who secured a 1-0 win over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila on Wednesday, and they will be eager to use their seniority and get off to a winning start.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Tinkler said, “We have given ourselves a fighting chance which was my objective when I came here, so objective achieved and now we have another three weeks of hard work against the NFD teams to ensure our safety.
“We come off the back of three massive results, the players responded really well but playing the NFD teams is a different ball game… You have to have a different mindset, the fear factor that I have is that you start lowering your level and you cannot afford too.
“You’ve got to maintain professional standards, PSL standards, and if you can do that then you can beat the NFD teams.”
Eagles are top of the play-offs following their opening day win, but Maritzburg can change that if they better their 1-0 scoreline over the weekend.
