Then And Now: How Gabuza’s SSU Career Compares To His Time At Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates misfiring forward Thamsanqa Gabuza has found a new lease on life at SuperSport United after a torrid six-season stay at Orlando Pirates. However, how does his current season compare to his last at Bucs?

Gabuza had a love-hate relationship with the Bucs supporters, who revered him for his displays on the continent, but also got on his back in domestic competitions, where he was more notorious for missing chances more than finishing them.

In his final season with the Buccaneers, the 32-year-old made a total of 17 appearances in all competitions for coach Milutin Sredojevic’s side, playing a total of 585 minutes.

Shockingly, the burly striker drew a blank in front of goal that season, failing to score a single goal for the club. This led to his exit where he joined Matsatsantsa a Pitori at the beginning of the 2019/20 season.

It is safe to say that the man from KZN experienced a change in fortune with the Tshwane outfit.

This season alone, Gabuza made 23 Absa Premiership appearances for Kaitano Tembo’s side, more than he ever did in any of his six seasons at Pirates. He played a combined total of 2,017 minutes this season, finding the back of the net on three occasions.

Along with strike partner Bradley Grobler, Gabuza was also pivotal in SuperSport clinching the MTN8 title in October 2019. His Brace against Bidvest Wits in the quarter final as well as his goal against Mamelodi Sundowns in the semis proving that his signing was a masterstroke by CEO Stan Matthews.
