Chiefs/Pirates Fatal Match Investigation Discontinued
The PSL Confirms Discontinuing With Chiefs/Pirates Match Enquiry
The Premier Soccer League has announced that the enquiry into the events of the match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in July, which led to tragic fatalities and injuries, has been discontinued.
Two people lost their lives while several others were injured during the pre-season Soweto Derby between Chiefs and Pirates at the FNB Stadium.
On August 01, it was confirmed by the PSL that the league appointed Advocate Vincent Maleka SC to look into the incident that took place at FNB Stadium on July 29.
The league has today (Friday) issued a statement that the enquiry into the events of July 29 has been discontinued.
PSL Statement on Advocate Maleka SC Enquiry
The enquiry into the events at the match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on 29 July 2017 led by Advocate Maleka SC has been discontinued by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in light of the institution of a Ministerial Committee of Inquiry by the Minister of Sport Mr Thulas Nxesi.
The decision was arrived at for a number of reasons including the indication by Advocate Maleka SC and his team that the Ministerial Commission would be better able to obtain all relevant information insofar as it will have powers of subpoena covering those not subject to the jurisdiction of the League.
The very existence of the Committee has meant that other relevant role-players that would have in all probability have volunteered essential information to Advocate Maleka SC were no longer prepared to that. Understandably some felt they should not have to duplicate their preparation and efforts.
Without powers of subpoena, Advocate Maleka SC and his team could not compel the provision of information.
The Ministerial Commission will be chaired by a retired judge and the League is convinced that it will be best placed to establish all the facts and circumstances.
The Maleka SC investigation has consequently been terminated on the basis that the League will provide such assistance to the Commission as may be required.
