Red Light: Why Clubs Cannot Return To Training

The Premier Soccer League confirmed that they are now in the process of awaiting a response from the South African government after they’ve submitted their application.

The league held a Board of Governors meeting on June 04, continuing with their ongoing discussions regarding the way forward for the 2019/20 season and the necessary protocols, which need to be put in place to return to training.

While the Minister of Sport, Nathi Mthethwa confirmed the green light for both contact and non-contact training to resume; there is still a long procedure before clubs get back into the swing of things.

According to an internal letter seen by the Siya crew, which was sent out to all member clubs, the league has once again asked for patience and reiterated that there cannot be a return to training unless and until they receive a response from the government.

“An application has been submitted to the Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture as indicated at the BoG meeting on 4 June 2020,” read one of the points in a communiqué signed by the PSL’s acting CEO, Mato Madlala.

“However, right now, the directives the Minister has indicated would be issued have not actually been promulgated nor have we received a response to our application.

“Rather than attempting to deal with the questions that arise on a piecemeal basis the approach we have agreed is that no Member Club will return to training unless and until the League has received a response and as soon as we do the Executive Committee will meet and provide you with full particulars of the way forward in light of that response – including the relevant protocols that will apply.

“You will be provided with advice including full particulars of the outcome of our application and the implications for professional football and immediately we are in a position to do so.

“Please await the advices of the Executive Committee and ensure that no participant in professional football acts in a fashion that could prejudice our sport,” Madlala added.
