Champs Crowned As Preseason Intensifies
The champions of the inaugural Msunduzi Cup were crowned yesterday at Harry Gwala Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal, with the winning coach calling it a ‘good initiative’.
Usuthu, who had new signings like Lehlohonolo Majoro on show, beat Maritzburg United in the semifinals before seeing off Bidvest Wits to get their hands on the trophy, a good confidence booster for the side before the Absa Premiership gets underway next week.
Majoro was back in AmaZulu colours after his move from Wits when his contract expired at the end of June, and he will have been happy to get on the scoresheet as he looks forward to the season ahead.
Cavin Johnson was happy with how his team performed in the first ever edition of the tournament, and hopes for it to grow year on year.
Speaking to the club’s official Twitter account, Johnson said, “It was a good initiative for the city. We hope that it gets bigger next year. It was a good experience for the boys… We are happy with our performances in both games. I think tactically we looked good and I am pleased with the result.”
Maritzburg 1-2 AmaZulu (Kutumela; Majoro, Vilakazi)
Wits 1-0 Arrows (Macheke)
AmaZulu 2-1 Wits (Chawapiwa, Ntuli; Dzvukamanja)
