Ministers once again brief the country on outbreak, amendments to regulations

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced that the number of positive Covid-19 cases have jumped to 1 505, an increase of 43.

It is believed that two more people have died from coronavirus in KwaZulu-Natal - an 80-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman - but medical staff are still awaiting test results.

As it stands, the death toll remains at seven, but it will rise to nine if these two cases return positive. Mkhize was speaking in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Friday, where there have been some positive cases.

SA at the mercy of falling rand as medical supplies run short

Deputy minister of health Joe Phaahla told South Africans on Friday that government would work to ensure a supply of medical equipment and protective gear for healthcare workers on the frontline of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Phaahla was speaking during an afternoon briefing to update the country on interventions aimed at fighting the outbreak, which had seen 1 505 confirmed cases in South Africa as of Friday.

Police have allegedly killed eight people during coronavirus lockdown

On Friday, IPID released a breakdown of the complaints they had received since the lockdown came into effect.

Six deaths came as a result of police action and the remaining two were in police custody.

South Africans abroad are now allowed to return home - but the how is unclear

South Africans who are abroad and want to return during the lockdown are allowed to do so, Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu has said.

But exactly how they will do this is unclear.

For South Africans, it seems the only logical attempt to return would be to secure a chartered flight with the assistance of their closest embassies, as very few commercial airliners are taking passengers, and borders being closed, in general...
