The Latest Coronavirus Infection Count
The total number of Covid-19 cases now is 1 462, this is an increase of 82.
Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, says the department is awaiting confirmation on two more possible deaths.
Police Minister Bheki Cele takes the podium
Cele says police will still ensure that gatherings, like funerals, do not exceed the 50-person limit.
He says 2 289 people have been arrested since the lockdown began. He has warned that 24 389 police officers, army members and metro cops are out in force.
Cele says there is an incorrect assumption that regulations differ among provinces. He says provincial governments can come forward to national government with suggestions, but regulations for the lockdown are binding for all provinces.
Two who raped and killed granny after having posed as soldiers during Covid-19 lockdown arrested
Two men, who allegedly posed as SA National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers to rape and kill a granny in KwaZulu-Natal, have been arrested, police said on Thursday.
The suspects are aged 24 and 27 and will be charged for murder and rape, police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said.
Bloodbath continues as plummeting rand weakens more than 2%
The rand reached a new all-time low against the US dollar on Thursday, as investors flocked to safe haven assets amid fears of a global recession caused by Covid-19, as well as the downgrade of South Africa's credit rating to "junk" by Moody's.
Overnight, the currency weakened to a low of R18.27/$. It started Thursday's session at R18.22/$, but the bloodbath continued in the afternoon as it weakened more than 2% to R18.65/$.
