The Fascinating Story Of KG – ‘We Had To Develop Someone Closer To Makelele’

While many know Kagisho Dikgacoi as a midfield strongman for Golden Arrows and Bafana Bafana, not many in the fraternity know that the Brandfort-born player played in defence when his career started.

Having started at Bloemfontein Young Tigers in the NFD (now GladAfrica Championship), Dikgacoi made a name for himself at Arrows during the four years of his first spell with the KwaZulu-Natal, before securing a big move to England in 2009 when he joined Fulham.

Crystal Palace and Cardiff are the other English clubs that KG played for before returning to Mzansi in 2016.

The 35-year-old retired in 2017, following his second spell with Abafana Bes’thende in the 2016/17 season.

Dikgacoi’s former coach Morena Ramoreboli recalls how it all started for the ex-Bafana star, who is now also a coach.

“I met Kagisho Dikgacoi when he was about 21, I think, and he went on and played in England. When you motivate the youngers players, it’s easy to say to them I saw him (Dikgacoi) growing. I worked with Kagisho at Bloemfontein Young Tigers and I helped him,” said the coach.

“When he arrived he was playing as a right back and I pushed him to central midfield and he did well. I was still young as a coach and I wanted to see what was special about (Claude) Makelele, and we had to develop someone who was closer to Makelele and (Patrick) Vieira in terms of positional sense in central midfield. He played under me in the junior team and he was promoted to the team in the NFD – the Tigers first team,” Ramoreboli told the Siya crew.

Ramoreboli is the same coach that identified Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch as a youngster and worked with him at Maluti FET College on his way to becoming the household name in Mzansi's topflight.
