6 Key Stats That Defined Downs' Title Triumph

The 6 Key Statistics That Saw Mamelodi Sundowns Clinch The Absa Premiership Crown On Saturday

By Soccer Laduma - Apr 29, 2018 08:17 PM
Saturday's three-goal haul against Ajax Cape Town left Mamelodi Sundowns with the third-highest scoring tally of an Absa Premiership title winner in the last decade, with one game still to go.
Pitso Mosimane rewrote the history books at Chloorkop this weekend after clinching a record third league title as Sundowns coach, as well as an eighth top-flight crown for the Tshwane giants - the most of any club in the PSL era.
It had looked like the party might be spoiled against relegation-threatened Ajax, though, after the Urban Warriors banged in the opener at Lucas Moripe Stadium after just two minutes on Saturday.
However, as Sundowns have shown so many times this season, they did not rush themselves and instead stuck to their fluid link-up game, stitching together 442 of their 520 passes for an 85% success rate as they let the ball do the work for them.
Sundowns didn't waste an ounce of their dominance either as they underlined their billing as the league's most prolific attackers, letting fly with no fewer than 20 shots through the 90 minutes.
More impressive was the fact they managed half of those on target, meaning their eventual 3-1 win marked a 33.3% conversion rate when it came to shots on target.
Unsurprisingly, Sundowns' overall tally of 49 goals this term - with one game remaining - is the third-highest scoring campaign by a league winner in the last decade, with the previous best having been 55 goals, scored by the Brazilians themselves in their 2015/16 title-winning campaign, while SuperSport's 2009/10 success saw them plunder 51.
That should come as a stark warning to Bloemfontein Celtic, the final would-be victim in Sundowns' Absa Premiership campaign, with the champions-elect to round off the season away to Phunya Sele Sele on May 12.
