Thabo Matlaba remains with Orlando Pirates despite the recent announcement that he is moving elsewhere for the new season.
On Friday last week, it was announced at Chippa United through the club’s official Twitter account that Matlaba has been signed from Pirates along with two other players.
As confirmed by the Port Elizabeth outfit on social media, the Tembisa-born utility player had been signed from the Soweto giants alongside midfielder, Thamsanqa Sangweni and Ghanaian forward Bernard Morrison.
Meanwhile, Pirates have announced parting ways with only Sangweni from the three aforementioned players, with no indication of why there has been no update on the two other players.
A source close to Pirates has confirmed to the Siya crew that Matlaba is still with the Soweto giants.
“Thabo Matlaba is at Orlando Pirates. He is the captain of the team and that is where he is, and preparing for the new season,” said the source.
Contacted for comment, Matlaba’s agent Abbie Rasimphi from Liberate Resources Sports Management declined to shed any light on the matter and cited that an update could be expected from Pirates.
“Orlando Pirates should be the ones making a statement regarding Thabo Matlaba and his said move to Chippa United. Pirates will make a statement about that. If there are people to make a statement about that it’s only Orlando Pirates. They are the employers of the player. I cannot say anything beyond this or discuss the matter any further,” said Rasimphi.
With Bucs back in the CAF Champions League, it is believed that Matlaba could be in the club's plans, as Milutin Sredojevic’s technical team plots their return to the continental competition.
