Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Thabani Stemmer, believes that Richard Ofori would succeed at the Soweto giants if he makes a move to the club.
The Maritzburg United’s number one goalkeeper is linked with a move to Pirates, as reported in the latest Soccer Laduma, edition 1111.
The Buccaneers have emerged as potential suitors for the Ghanaian international, with indications that the club is looking to bolster their goalkeeping department in preparation for next season.
The 25-year-old Ghanaian has been playing regularly both at club and international level and would bring much-needed experience to Bucs, should they secure his services.
“Orlando Pirates are interested in Richard Ofori from Maritzburg United. With inconsistencies and injuries in their goalkeeping department, the club is considering making an offer for Ofori for next season,” said the source.
Speaking to the Siya crew, Stemmer highlighted some of the qualities Ofori would bring to the Buccaneers if he moves.
“He is a very good goalkeeper and is a Ghanaian international. I remember the last time I watched Ghana play he was in goals for them. What I like about him is that he is also good with aerial balls. He is very vocal and is good at organising his defence. He is a good goalkeeper with a winning mentality. He doesn’t like it when he concedes. He becomes very angry when he concedes a goal. If it wasn’t for him Maritzburg would have been in a worse situation than where they are (at the bottom of the log). For the past two seasons, he has been one of the good goalkeepers in the PSL,” said Stemmer.
As things stand, Wayne Sandilands appears to have taken over as the number one in coach Milutin Sredojevic’s team, while Jackson Mabokgwane has been deputising for him.
Siyabonga Mpontshane appears to have fallen down the pecking order, while Brilliant Khuzwayo is still yet to play after his injury earlier in the season.
“There have been many good goalkeepers that joined big teams in the past with good reputation only to find out that they don’t gel with the team. However, because he (Ofori) has international experience, maybe that would give him the edge. There have been many good goalkeepers that went to Pirates highly recommended but didn’t make it at the club. He has gathered some experience in the PSL and I wish him well. He is one of the keepers that I like,” added Stemmer.
