THE BREAKDOWN: Why Pirates Star Can Snatch Golden Boot

Lebogang Manyama and Tendai Ndoro are the front runners for the 2016/17 Absa Premiership Golden Boot and, in the build-up to the last matchday of the season, we take a look at which player could find the back of the net today and claim the award.

Chiefs, Downs And Bucs To Battle It Out For Jantjie?

At the beginning of the season, Ndoro led the way by netting 11 goals by the beginning of December, but, as his team, Orlando Pirates experienced a dip in form, his goalscoring form followed suit. In fact, it took ten league games before he managed to score again in the 3-2 loss against Free State Stars from the penalty spot. Eight games later, Ndoro hasn’t scored again and his tally still stands at 12 for the season.

However, it is worth taking note of the fact that Ndoro’s incredible start to the season was a result of a stellar performance against today’s opponents, Golden Arrows, where he scored a hattrick. Repeating that feat would see him take his tally to 15 goals, two ahead of the current leader Manyama, should he fail to score against Polokwane City.

Looking at Manyama’s form, however, one could paint an entirely different picture. The former SuperSport United attacking midfielder failed to score in his first four games of the season, including the reverse fixture against today’s opponents, Polokwane City. Yet, since opening his account against Highlands Park at the end of December, Manyama has not gone longer than four games without scoring throughout the campaign, including a spell of 11 goals scored in 15 games between September and March, which has seen his total goal tally to 13 for the season.

Morrison Challenging Bucs Fans To Weigh His Season

With that said, Manyama has never scored against Polokwane City in four Absa Premiership appearances against them, while Ndoro has scored five goals in three league games against Arrows over the years.

Therefore, when it comes to goalscoring form over the course of the campaign, it would appear that Manyama has been the more consistent player between the two. Yet, on the other hand, Ndoro’s record against today’s respective opponents is far better than Manyama’s and, with just one goal separating the two of them, the race for the Golden Boot is not yet over.
