Teko Modise Opens Up About What Attracted Him To Cape Town City

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Teko Modise, has opened up about what attracted him to join Cape Town City in July this year.

The 34-year-old parted ways with Sundowns in June this year, after six years of service to the CAF Champions League winners.

On July, 12, this year, City announced the official signing of the veteran midfielder and in an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, the player opens up about what attracted him to join the Mother City-based club.

“I mean, everybody saw how this team played last season... their attacking football, how free they were on the pitch, how expressive they were, how special they were. Me, being a footballer who enjoys playing, I wanted to get that joy back. I wanted to have what these guys had – the feeling of enjoying the game,” Modise told the Siya crew.

“On top of that, you have an opportunity to work with someone like Benni. I mean, it wouldn’t make sense for me not to come to City. This is someone we’ve known each other for years, unlike having to worry about how my next coach was going to feel about me, so it all made perfect sense for me. You also have John (Comitis) who has been in football for the longest time ever and uyayazi into ayenzayo (he knows what he’s doing),” he added.

U did enjoy at Downs whilst your form was still High, you didn't compete well for your position, you know that Mabunda is better than you General. And you say Komitis knows what he's doing?? Hehehe ohhh PM doesn't? ...let me remind you my cow what attracted you to CTC, it's you and Moriri, both of you wanted game time and you both knew that At Downs there's competition and you decided to go and get game time. ... lastly Moriri Came back home and he didn't talk too much now he's the coach of our development team and our next Pitso Jingles Mosimane.....at least i reminded you CowLierDise, now you know why you left Downs for City...

The defending champions have had a chequered start to their local season, and in their last four, have won two and lost two, beating Free State Stars 2-1 in their final game on Monday. But they would be concerned that their leading scorer in the Champions League, Anthony Laffor, is out injured, having taken a knock in the game against Stars. Add to this that Yannick Zakri and Khama Billiat are also on the injury list, Sundowns will be sweating. The good news is the return to form of Sibusiso Vilakazi, who also has two goals to his name in this campaign, and the confidence boosting performance of Percy Tau, who, even at his young age, has shown growth beyond imagination. The player known as Di a rora, (they roar) has shown a real mighty roaring attitude as he goes out in the hunt for goals. He scored both goals in their last game, brilliant goals both. But coach Mosimane and his deputy Mangcoba Mqithi would have been poring over footage of the North African side’s games. They would have noted their typical North African style of bursts of counter attacks, where their two key men are A Benchaki and W Jabor, who are both on two goals for the side, attacking from both the left and right with pace and aggression. This means the pair of Tebogo Langerman and Thapelo Morena will have to be on full time alert, while Hlompho Kekana will need to stay on guard in front of his centre back pairing where Mosimane has options following the return of Wayne Arendse from injury. What is critical for the Tshwane Giants is not to allow Wydad to play. Kekana’s diagonal play to find Percy Tau will give them scoring opportunities. And they have to aim to play an attacking game and take a healthy lead to Morocco for the second leg, as their home ground is another of those stifling cauldrons that suffocates visitors with the 45 000 crowd adding to the pressure. But that’s another game. For this weekend, the focus will be to win, and the champions have provided an incentive for their supporters to attend by offering the Yellow Brigade free entry while the entrance for other supporters will be R20.

In the current campaign they have had a brilliant run, beating Al Ahly 2-0, Cottonsport 2-0, Zanaco 1-0. They also beat Kawkab Marakech 1-0 and 2-0 in the local Cup. Up to this point, they had not conceded a single goal, evidence that they can hold it tight at the back and starve the opposition of goals.
