Age cheating is an ongoing phenomenon worldwide and each year, more and more evidence emerges of players altering their birth date.
In the latest Soccer Laduma Carwash podcast, former Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise shared an interesting story in his early playing days where he came face-to-face with the opportunity to alter his age.
“I was in a situation when I was 15-years-old at the time and there was a Nike tournament in Joburg that you play U15 and I only had clinic card but they needed a birth certificate and all those stuff so I had to go back and do that,” Modise shared.
“They said to me, no, we can do this for you and I said – I don’t even qualify to play in this division and they said, don’t worry we will make the necessary adjustments on your birth certificate so that you can qualify and play.
“I ran away from that, yes I was desperate to make it but I wasn’t even sure how I was going to make it…”
The General went on to boast how he retired at his correct age, while there are some players - that he knows of - who will not be able to be proud of the same thing.
“I was even saying it before I retired - that I am retiring at my right age, this is my right age, I am not retiring just because I can’t make it. Some of you are even my age but are still playing that is why you are still struggling because the expectations are so high, you are saying you are 27 but you are not playing like a 27-year-old,” he added.
