Teko: You Don’t Have To Buy Success…

Teko Modise has given his opinion on how far South African football has come over the years.

The 36-year-old officially retired from professional football at the end of the 2018/19 season with Cape Town City, now looking ahead to his new role at the club.

Speaking to the media following his official announcement, Modise was asked about how South Africa’s top flight has improved over the years.

The former Bafana Bafana international went on to point out that it has come to a time in South African football where so-called ‘smaller teams’ are now able to challenge for the league.

“I think that the PSL standard has improved a lot, in a sense that we all know that the last 20-25 years there have only been two teams that were dominating the league,” Modise said.

“For the last 3-5 years now we can see the so-called ‘small teams’ are actually steadily competing as well and you can see the way the league is until the last day where you find 4-5 teams in the relegation zone and you can see that the competitiveness of the league.”

“From now on as well we can find Cape Town City, which is called a ‘small team’ - if you can win the league to change the perception of South African football, showing that sometimes you don’t have to buy success and that will inspire other teams as well to actually look to win the league and not just be in the top eight,” he added.
