Teko Defends Bafana

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder, Teko Modise, believes that the national team is being harshly judged, and points to the lack of effective and strategic development structures as the root cause of the problem.

This comes after Bafana received some criticism from some fans and Sports and Culture Minister, Fikile Mbalula, after they crashed out of the 2014 Chan tournament.

“It is sad to see the supporters harshly point fingers when the team loses or fails to achieve expectations. It is difficult to just work miracles on the field just because you are expected to,” Modise said on his official website.

“Firstly, the supporters keep saying we do not have a style of play, or that we have lost the traditional South African way of playing which is skill showcasing. They do not realise that we have to grow and learn from what the best teams in the world are doing.

“If you want to beat the best, you have to be aware of how they play and try to implement an effective way of countering that play. Football has grown and is very tactical compared to the past,” added Modise.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder says South Africa has to develop young players who can later on represent a winning Bafana Bafana.

“Just changing the team or the coaches will always lead us to the same point of losing and blaming the technical team and players,” concluded Modise.
