Absa Premiership

Full Time: SuperSport United 1-2 Moroka Swallows

Date:  18 September 2013

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

A goal in each half from Edward Manqele and Siyabonga Nomvethe saw Moroka Swallows beat SuperSport United 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night, and consequently handed the Matsatsantsa their first defeat of the season.

The first 45 minutes was not action packed as the majority of the football was congested to the middle of the park which resulted in chances on goal being few and far between.

Still, Swallows did start the brighter of the two teams and opened the scoring as early as the eighth minute.

Some brilliant set-up play from Lerato Chabangu created the goal as he beat a couple of defenders on the edge of the box before slipping the ball to an unmarked Edward Manqele inside the box, and he made no mistake with a clinical finish into the bottom left-hand corner form 16-yards out, 1-0.

After that, however, the game tightened up and both defences stood firm and were able to abate any danger for the next 20 minutes.

In the 31st minute the next significant effort was made on goal as Asavela Mbekile fired over from long range.

Two minutes later and SuperSport created their only real chance of the half from a set-piece. David Mathebula delivered an accurate corner-kick which was met by the head of Edwin Gyimah, but his effort missed the target.

The second 45 started with both sides playing attacking football as Mathebula fired just wide two minutes after the restart.

A minute later and United were attacking at the other end, but Sameegh Doutie headed a cross over the target.

Both sides continued to press forward, but it was Swallows who found the back of the net for the second time in the 59th minute as Siyabonga Nomvethe met a Chabangu corner with a powerful header to double his side’s lead, 2-0.

United tried to find their way back into the game and did manage to pull a goal back in the 72nd minute as Edwin Gyimah headed home a Thuso Phala corner-kick, 2-1.

Swallows held on for the win as SuperSport suffered their first league defeat of the season.
