Despite trailing the GladAfrica Championship leaders Ajax Cape Town for a large majority of the season, Swallows FC coach Brandon Truter revealed how his side managed to snatch promotion right at the death.
The old adage: ‘It’s not how you start but how you finish’ could not be more true for Swallows.
For a large period of the season, the newly-formed Birds went about their business unseen, but showed their true character when it mattered most.
The PSL bio-bubble proved to be a master stroke from Brandon Truter’s side. While Ajax came up with inconsistent results, his side managed to claim 16 of the 18 points on offer, eventually winning the league by a single goal ahead of the Urban Warriors, who will contest in the relegation/promotion playoffs.
Speaking to the media after the game, Truter revealed how he planned the stroke of genius.
“It was a tough journey, the whole GladAfrica, I think if you look at the log through the season, Ajax was on top for 14 weeks, Uthongathi FC for eight weeks, JDR were also on top for four or eight weeks, we were on top for three days and we snatched it at the end. It’s not about how you start, but how you finish,” Truter said.
Truter revealed that it was through meticulous planning during the lockdown period by his technical team that saw Swallows leapfrog the leaders and mount a late title challenge.
“It was a tough road and prior to the BSE the team went into quarantine and self isolation for two weeks and the technical team were superb, we had to come up with a formula that could work in that short period of time to get the boys ready for the mini tournament, if you like.
"From the six games, 18 points on offer, we walked away with 16. We are the champions today,” an ecstatic Truter added.
