Following Saturday’s stampede at the FNB Stadium, where Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played in the Carling Black Label Cup, Nxesi announced that he will constitute a Ministerial Commission of Inquiry to look into the events of the weekend which left two people dead and several others injured.

NAFSA has issued a statement to encourage Nxesi to speed up the Ministerial Commission of Inquiry.

The National African Football Supporters Association (NAFSA) welcomes Minister Thulas Nxesi's announcement to set up a Ministerial inquiry over the unfortunate and regrettable stampede which resulted in the death of two football loyalists at FNB Stadium last Saturday.

However, NAFSA calls on the Honourable Minister to speedily complete such an inquest.

"As the custodian of the Sport and Recreation Events Management Act, the Minister is well in his rights to call for such an investigation, particularly that lives have been lost in this instance. It is our plea that this be completed within seven days as we owe South Africa's football loving people and bereaved families concrete answers on what actually happened on that unfaithful day," said NAFSA Secretary General, Siyabulela Makunga.

NAFSA also notes with appreciation joint announcement by Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs Chairmen on their undertaking to have the matter investigated independently and completed within fourteen days.

"We would like to thank both Chairmen for allowing an independent investigation of the matter as we strongly believe that they are already conflicted on this issue. Furthermore, we are making an appeal that the investigation be completed within the set time frame," Makunga concluded.

NAFSA is a national representative body of all football loyalists whose aim is to mobilize all South Africans to rally behind football while creating an enabling environment for their meaningful participation in the transformation of football.

Issued by NAFSA Spokesperson, Thabo Masombuka.
