SuperSport Edge Ajax

Telkom Knockout

Result: SuperSport 2-1 Ajax CT

Date: 5 October 2013

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

SuperSport United secured a tense 2-1 win over Ajax Cape Town in their Telkom Knockout clash on Saturday afternoon.

The game got off to the best possible start for the Urban Warriors who hit the front just three minutes in when Lance Davids' strike took a wicked deflection off Edwin Gyimah and beat Ronwen Williams.

Matsatsantsa seemed a little shocked by the goal but got settled quickly and by the 14th minute they were level through Sibusiso Khumalo - who saw his strike from the edge of the area fly in off the inside of the post.

David Mathebula had a free-kick saved by Anssi Jaakkola in the 17th minute before Mame Niang set up Mathebula who saw his deflected shot off Thulani Hlatshwayo put SuperSport in the lead.

Ajax again started the half brightly with Mogogi Gabonamong doing well to block Franklin Cale's shot before Eleazar Rodgers spurned a superb chance by sending his close range header straight at the goalkeeper in the 68th minute.

Kurt Lentjies had the next chance but his attempt went inches wide after good work from Sameehg Doutie four minutes later.

Ajax's hopes were then boosted when Gyimah was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 77th minute, leaving them 13 minutes to find a way back.

Bantu Mzwakali came closest to find a way through as SuperSport defended bravely - with the youngster firing just wide in the 82nd minute before Williams denied him in the first minute of stoppage time.

Despite their efforts, SuperSport saw the game to the final whistle and booked their place in the last eight.
