2013 AFCON Quarter-Final
Result: Ivory Coast 1-2 Nigeria
Date: 3 February 2013
Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium
Nigeria's Super Eagles put on a stunning display to defeat tournament favourites Ivory Coast 2-1 and booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
The Super Eagles started the game well and had the first chance in the eighth minute when Brown Ideye was found at the far post by a free-kick from Victor Moses but he nodded over.
Moses then tested Boubacar Barry with a thunderous long-range strike which the goalkeeper was only able to parry.
Souleman Bamba tried to respond at the other from a corner but his attempted overhead kick was well over. The brilliant Moses continued to trouble at the other end though and a clever backheel almost set up Emmanuel Emenike.
Emenike should have opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he was slipped through perfectly by Ideye but he produced a wild finish.
Didier Drogba was penalised for a handball in the 34th minute but it looked like a poor decision as the striker seemed to control with his chest before seeing his strike deflected wide.
The Super Eagles would then hit the front when a free-kick was touched on to Emenike who blasted a shot at goal and somehow it went right through Barry.
Romaric curled a free-kick just over the crossbar three minutes later and Nigeria went into the break with a lead.
The Elephants found a response just five minutes into the second-half when Cheick Tiote was found unmarked at the far post and he nodded in a free-kick from Drogba.
Ivory Coast survived a scramble in the 65th minute before Enyeama made a fantastic double save at the other end to deny Toure and Gervinho.
The upset was back on with 12 minutes to go when Sunday Mba let rip at the edge of the area and his strike took a wicked deflection before looping over the top of the goalkeeper and in.
Lacina Traore thought that he would tap in the equaliser with five minutes to go when the ball fell at his feet at the edge of the six-yard area but Mikel brilliantly poked the ball away.
Ivory Coast tried frantically to find a last-gasp goal but the sturdy Nigerian defence held firm to send the Elephants tumbling out.
