Strong Message For Rulani As Downs Prepare For Bucs Clash

A strong message has been issued to Orlando Pirates’ Rulani Mokwena, as the Soweto giants are set to visit Mamelodi Sundowns for this coming weekend’s match.

The Buccaneers, who are at the top of the Absa Premiership log, will be hosted by the Brazilians, who are in third place on the standings, at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium for their match on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the week, following Bucs’ 2-1 win over Polokwane City, former Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu took to Twitter to claim that Mokwena was the reason for ‘making Pirates a top team again’, a comment which was hugely criticised by a number of social media users, as well as some of the pundits in South African football fraternity, including Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy.

The 26-year-old, who now belongs to Amiens SC in France, later issued a formal apology on Wednesday afternoon for his Twitter comments and has confirmed that he deleted the tweet.

With coach Pitso Mosimane and his team at the Chloorkop outfit preparing for their upcoming match against Bucs, after defeating Free State Stars 3-1 on Wednesday evening, former Sundowns and Bafana Bafana striker Philemon Masinga has weighed in on the debate about Mokwena and his role at Pirates under head coach Milutin Sredojevic.

In Soccer Laduma Radio’s Big Issue, Masinga said in the Downs v Bucs match preview, that the Soweto giants’ assistant coach should not forget his role.

Masinga said in part, “Rulani must concentrate on Pirates, it’s not his job to talk about other teams’ players. He must not forget that he is just an assistant coach, he is not a head coach. He is starting to talk like he is a head coach now. The buck stops with the head coach. The last word stands with the head coach.”
