Mamelodi Sundowns outclassed Ajax Cape Town 3-2 in their Absa Premiership clash at Loftus Stadium in a match peppered with penalties
Thabo Nthethe, Kalego Mashego (penalty) and Anthony Laffor scored for Sundowns, while Ajax added two from the spot, one by Nathan Paulse, the other by Lance Davids.
Referee Victor Gomes awarded five penalties in the game, two of which were missed by Sundowns, and the Brazilians also missed a number of other good chances.
Elias Pelembe had the first chance of the game in the 13th minute but Elias Pelembe’s effort could not beat Ajax keeper Anssi Jaakkola.
Sundowns could have had the lead in the 18th minute, but Teko Modise's attempt from the spot was saved by Jaakkola.
Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Teko Modise whipped in a free-kick for Thabo Nthethe to get on the end off and make it 1-0 to the Brazilians.
The home side doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Grandwald Scott on Bongani Zungu.
Katlego Mashego stepped up to confidently to slot the spot-kick home and make it 2-0 to the hosts with 32 minutes played at Loftus Stadium.
Ajax however responded well and won a penalty themselves before the half-time interval, when Alje Schut challenged Granwald Scott unfairly in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.
Urban Warriors striker Nathan Paulse stepped up and made no mistake with his right-footed spot-kick, to claw the Cape Town side back into the game at 2-1 going into half-time.
The second-half brought about the third penalty of the game when Keagan Dolly was penalised for handball in the box following an Ellias Pelembe corner, but this time Mashego’s could not put away his spot-kick as it hit the woodwork
The second-placed side however restore their two goal lead in the 75th minute when Anthony Laffor headed home a Pelembe corner to make it 3-1 for the home side.
Referee Gomes awarded his fifth penalty of the night in the 89th minute, the visitors' second for a handball decision, which was converted by Ajax substitute Lance Davids.
