Soccer-Laduma has learnt that Mamelodi Sundowns’ new Ghanaian signing, Rashid Sumaila, will only link up with the team when they touch down in Ghana on Friday.
The 21-year-old central defender recently penned a five-year deal with Pitso Mosimane’s club, having impressed while on trial last season. He has represented his country at U20, U23 and senior level, and is thought to be one of the bright future stars of Ghanaian football.
It was initially believed that he would join up with his new teammates for preseason training on June 24, but the player himself has confirmed to the crew that he is training on his own back in his home country while waiting for the club to arrive in Ghana for a series of friendly games.
Speaking exclusively to the crew from Ghana, he revealed, “Yes, I’ll only be joining the guys when they come here to play friendly games. I’m very excited to have joined the club and can’t wait to start this new chapter of my football career.”
The player signed his Brazilians contract when he was in camp in South Africa with the Ghana national team before their World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Lesotho respectively and thereafter went back home. He is expected to fight it out for a place in the starting line-up with the likes of Alje Schut and Method Mwanjale, with the futures of Clayton Daniels and Wayne Arendse up in the air.
