Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, Stuart Baxter, insists that captain, Itumeleng Khune, is not irreplaceable, but didn’t mention who would replace him.
Khune has been out of action since injuring himself in the warm-up for the Black Leopards Nedbank Cup tie, picking up a knock on his ankle and missing a number of the Amakhosi’s games, with Reyaad Pieterse taking his place.
Now, as reported earlier by Soccer Laduma, it has been confirmed that he will definitely miss the Soweto Derby, and will still be out for a while.
Speaking at today’s press conference, Baxter said, “Khune is not available for the game. You can't say he is irreplaceable. Yes he will be missed, but you cant say he’s irreplaceable. Even Barcelona can replace Messi.
“We have players in the squad that can do the job & whoever replaces him will have the squad's full support.”
Meanwhile, Baxter also said that he’s targeting a win over Chiefs’ rivals, saying that all of the games prior to his one have been tight affairs.
“Every derby I have been at has been a close affair. Could have gone either way. Hopefully this one will go our way. We have won the CBL derby before, but it will be nice to win one in the league.”
The game between Chiefs and Pirates, the 152nd official derby between the two teams, begins at 15h30 on Saturday.
