Baxter Relates To Igesund's Experience

Former Bafana Bafana coach and the current man in charge of Kaizer Chiefs, Stuart Baxter, has explained why he relates to the challenges Gordon Igesund may have faced in charge of the national team.

Baxter was in charge of Bafana from 2004 until 2005, although he vacated the role after not managing to help the team qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

Nonetheless, Baxter's comments about the challenges of being in charge of Bafana have come soon after Igesund was told by SAFA that his deal would not be renewed. The governing body decided to part ways with the coach after he failed to meet his mandates of reaching the semi-finals of the 2013 Afcon, as well as qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The English-born coach explained to Soccer Laduma that the quality of players the country is producing can often dictate a national coach's success.

He told the Siya crew, "I've been a national coach in different countries. It's the same wherever you go. You have little time to put your signature onto things and the expectations are very high. That is not a good balance if you don't have say the Italian, English or German player-producing machine behind you. Therefore, any national team job is one of passion really. It's because you really want the job and you want to try and make it good."

Baxter added, "There's a difference of working at a big club but it's in a different way - you live with the pressure every day. With the national team job you're up on the stage when you're called for a national qualification game, you know. I don't think big club experience qualifies you for the national job. As I said, you are dependent on what goes on in the football industry of that country. The successful international coaches reap the rewards of the work that's being done at grassroots level."

At this stage, Igesund's predecessor is yet to be announced although Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz, is thought to be among the leading candidates.

The crew will closely monitor developments.
