Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has less than a year to run on his current contract and we take a look at the early candidates that are linked to take over his job, should he leave the club.

Click through the images above to see how Steve Komphela’s league record since 2006 compares to the early candidates to take over his job at Kaizer Chiefs.

In Soccer Laduma issue number 1039’s Siya Special, we took a look at the possible reshuffling of Amakhosi’s technical team that could be in the works due to Komphela’s tenure at the club that has seen the club go two seasons without silverware and already eliminated from one competition this season, the MTN8.

Amongst the early candidates linked to taking over the reins from the former Maritzburg United mentor are Ruud Krol, Gavin Hunt, Manqoba Mngqithi, Muhsin Ertugral and Gordon Igesund and we look at how Komphela’s numbers compare to his counterparts.

The former Bafana Bafana mentor has been in the dugout for Free State Stars, Platinum Stars, Maritzburg United and the Glamour Boys over the course of the last 11 years and has sat in the dugout for 258 matches in that time frame, winning 94 of those, drawing 83 and losing 81, accumulating 365 points at an average of 1.41 points per game.

Ruud Krol spent just 90 league games at Orlando Pirates between 2008 and 2011, winning 42 of those, drawing 33 and losing 15, accumulating 159 points at an average of 1.77 points per game. Then Gavin Hunt, who worked with Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits over the course of the last 11 years, took charge of 330 league games, winning 161, drawing 91 and losing 78, meaning that he accumulated 574 points at an average of 1.74 per game.

Manqoba Mngqithi, meanwhile, has not been the head coach of a club since 2014 but was in charge of Golden Arrows, AmaZulu and Chippa United prior to taking over the role as Pitso Mosimane’s assistant at Mamelodi Sundowns. In his seven years as a head coach in the last 11 years, he oversaw 177 matches, winning 50, drawing 59 and losing 68, accumulating 209 points at an average of 1.18 points per game.

Muhsin Ertugral spent time in the Orlando Pirates, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Ajax Cape Town and the Chiefs dugout since 2006, overseeing 168 games, winning 62, drawing 56 and losing 50 on his way to collecting 242 points at an average of 1.44 per game.

Finally, Gordon Igesund, who’s been in charge of Mamelodi Sundowns, Maritzburg United, Free State Stars, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Highlands Park in the period between 2006 and 2017, has accumulated 271 points, having won 70 of his 96 games in the dugout, drawn 61 and lost 65, at an average of 1.38 points per game.

11 Players Kaizer Chiefs Failed To Sign

Therefore, the average points tallies might provide an indication as to which of the early candidates should be made a priority for Chiefs or whether Steve Komphela deserves a contract extension, which remains a possibility in the current scenario. However, average points may not tell the full story, with each coach taking charge of different clubs under different circumstances and the numbers alone may flatter to deceive in some cases. The coaches are ranked by average points tallies as follows:

1.       Ruud Krol – 1.77 points per game

2.       Gavin Hunt – 1.74 points per game

3.       Muhsin Ertugral – 1.44 points per game

4.       Steve Komphela - 1.41 points per game

5.       Gordon Igesund – 1.38 points per game

6.       Manqoba Mngqithi – 1.18 points per game

@Realydoctor10 Your comments make sense and i concur with your contribution. My biggest problem we are attacking the coach and not mentioning the players poor performances. Is it normal for players like Parker, Mido, Eksteen, whom cashes a lot of money on monthly basis to play a full seasons without scoring a goal? Aren't they contributing to the coaches woos? Secondly, i am worried by Chiefs legends whom decided to jump the bandwagon of "Steve must go" What have they contributed to alleviate the standard of the club that supported them during their playing days? I am worried by so called TV Sport Analysts who happened to play for Chiefs whom decided to be armchair commentators hanging their own house dirty linen? Chiefs current situation needs a collective thinking, support and guidance from all staunch members of this club, and besides Steve is the first Black and local Coach in this club. We tolerated Middendorp 18 draws and 6 losses which landed us on position 9, and none of us complained, reason, Middendorp was White, what ever he was doing was normal, and whatever happens to Steve currently is abnormal, let us balance the equation please!!.

@Vhivha "Small teams 've few supporters than soweto gaints and Sundowns so thats why they mocked Steve the way they do because this supporters sometimes put hands to help the team about the coach mistakes remember Pitso was struggling to much to his work with Sundowns his fans throw everything to him and they was want to see him gone at Chloorkop its where Pitso started to wake up and pull up his sox to press Practice Motsepe to help him as he added three assistance coaches next him and Motsepe allow him to what will help the team because he want to see success to his team so he did support him with players this soweto gaints problem is selfished and it rule them even to something that will help their teams future they must buy players u can't keep players from 2010/2015 untill now u still looking to benefits good results from those old players no so the coach will failed because this players are tired my man Hunt worked with teams that listening to his request from Swallows he lefted them because the team failed to support him with good materail and Birds fans was mocking him bra so Supersport gave him tools to work then he gave them good results even Wits gave him good material last season u saw what did he do with them they don't care about what is happening to Wits since the league has been started because they know that he try to change his team and build the one he like to use this season they're patient for him because they trust his work bra so thats the problem to fudball

Etugral will never coach Chiefs but can coach SL team of Cowditors. Chiefs has its own management to decided on the new coach not SL.

@Realydoctor10 Steve is mocked week in week out because he is Black. Hunt lost his 4 opening matches and Black Mzantsi fans and mediocre media stations are turning a blind eye. Very few are challenging players like Parker, Eksteen, Maluleka who last score goals in 2015, these guys are cashing in big fat salaries and are nowhere close to scoring goals in the field of play. Is this normal? Where is their conscious? How do they sleep at night when not delivering to their mandated duties? Where is SAPFU when its members are not performing? Why SAPFU jumps only when there is a salary dispute? It is not fair to only ATTACK a coach when players are not delivering. Steve has huge mistakes, but he is not alone, the players are also contributing to Chiefs failures period!
