His perfectionism? His tactics? Things have been looking up for Golden Arrows under Steve Komphela, but what has the former Kaizer Chiefs coach changed in Kwa-Zulu Natal?
Golden Arrows have already won more games since Komphela’s arrival than they did in the first 17 games of the 2018/19 season, and with a Nedbank Cup quarter-final on the horizon and a top-eight spot up for grabs, the ex-Amakhosi man seems to be onto a good thing.
Abafana Bes’thende have found their scoring boots in the games following Komphela’s arrival, and in the build-up to their recent clash with Orlando Pirates had scored in every game that he had been in charge of.
Speaking to the media recently, the club’s goalkeeper, Sherwyn Naicker, gave his take on Komphela’s changes, saying, “Steve is a very hands-on kind of guy. He’s a perfectionist. Obviously, he’s changed the tactics completely compared to how we were under Coach Clinton. He has a certain idea of how we should be playing and the guys have pretty much jumped onto that ship and haven’t looked back since.
“I think we’re in good form at the moment with him, we’re starting to gel really well as a team, and we’re starting to understand what he wants from us. He’s really brought the team together in terms of his tactics and the mentality that he wants. I think everyone definitely knows exactly what’s expected.”
