‘The Coach That Has Impressed Me Is Komphela’

Steve Komphela – the head coach of Golden Arrows – has been chosen by a former colleague as the coach who has impressed with his work this season.

Abafana Bes’thende went to the COVID-19 PSL break in 7th place on the Absa Premiership standings with 32 points from 23 matches.

Last season, the KwaZulu-Natal outfit finished 10th with 36 points after 30 matches, with Komphela’s reign at the club having started halfway through the campaign.

Veteran Zambian coach Jacob Sakala has lauded Komphela for the Lamontville team’s progress.

“So far this season the coach that has impressed me in the PSL is Steve Komphela. I have been following his progress and I am aware that he is working with a lot of youngsters at Golden Arrows and has made them one of the exciting teams,” Sakala told the Siya crew.

At the beginning of his coaching career, having returned from overseas at the end of his playing career and worked alongside Muhsin Ertugral at Kaizer Chiefs as his assistant, Komphela went on to work under Sakala at the now defunct Limpopo outfit Dynamos, before his breakthrough as the head coach himself at the club.

“What I like the most about Steve is that he has the vision and I know that from having worked with him in the past. You can see his vision with how he is working with the youngsters at Arrows. He is a promising future coach for South Africa (Bafana Bafana). He is bringing the best out of the younger ones. Arrows is not a club known for operating with bigger budgets, but with the limited resources at his disposal, Steve has been able to quietly to the job. I don’t have a doubt that he will lead the Arrows youngsters to finish in a good position in the top eight and manage to get some of them to the national team,” added Sakala.
