The war of words between Maritzburg United coach, Steve Komphela, and former player, Delron Buckley, appears to be cooling off. In edition 870 of Soccer Laduma, Buckley alleged that Komphela had lied to him about his early release from the club, and that the 46-year-old had made promises he didn't keep.
The experienced midfielder alleged, "He could've said we were not getting a new deal and that would've been fine. But he left us with the impression we were getting a new contract, you know. Have the balls to come and tell us!...He didn't even have the balls to come to training to tell me (I was released) because he was scared. (If he did) I was going to tell him, 'Thank you for talking s**t the other day'"
Komphela was given opportunity to respond to the 36 year old's comments, saying, "This letter should not serve to be an albatross around your precious neck. So please, sir, allow me to indulge you...it might not be your usual hot fudge sundae...I deny categorically that I ever said your contract would be prolonged...you've totally misjudged my character. You don't not know my distinctive mental and moral qualities. You have no clue of my strength and originality...In relation to '(having no) balls, a lot of people have claimed to have balls when it came time to showing them, they were the first to chicken out and screech...I'm never a coward. I have been through fire, ice and hell...I fear nothing."
Nonetheless, despite the heated exchange between the two in this week's paper, it now seems that things are cooling off in each camp. Soccer Laduma has recieved an e-mail from Buckley in which he expresses his hope that no further airing of dirty laundry will take place in the media. It also seems likely that Komphela won't be making any further comments either.
Soccer Laduma will monitor any further developments but at this stage, it seems the war of words between the pair has cooled off and has come to an end.
