'We Wanted To Keep Pirates Guessing'

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker reveals how he wanted to keep Orlando Pirates guessing with his formation after facing them in the Telkom Knockout last weekend.

The newly promoted side registered their second win of the season after defeating the Soweto giants 1-0 at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

Stellenbosch suffered defeat to Pirates last weekend at Orlando Stadium, but Barker reveals he decided to go with two strikers up front this time around.

"It's almost un-describable what we have achieved in such a short space of time. To come and play in a beautiful Cape Town Stadium against a big team like Orlando Pirates, to put the effort and get the positive results, it's really massive," the former Pretoria University FC coach told SuperSport after the match.

"I just want to give credit to the players they work hard each and everyday and the rewards, you can see the effort they put in there, the commitment. If you keep on working and show that sort of attitude and work ethic, then you just have to be happy for the lads," he continued.

"We changed our formation from last week a bit, we sort of wanted to mix things up and keep them guessing on how we were gonna play. We played with Iqraam [Rayners] and Waseem [Isaacs] upfront and I thought that would cause them problems because they do send numbers forward and I was hoping on transition we could hurt them.

"Yeah, I thought they made a bit of an error with a poor pass and having one extra body upfront helped us. Ja, massive for Iqraam, scoring again for the third time in a row, two NFD [former GladAfrica Championship] strikers they are among the top scorers in the league, credit to them, so our plan worked. They are a good team, they are technically good, we just had to put numbers behind the ball, fortunately it worked for us today.

"The defence was superb, they fought hard, the legs were hurting in the last ten minutes, a massive effort that they put in."
