Starting XI: Celtic v Sundowns

Telkom Knockout Last 16

Teams: Bloemfontein Celtic v Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 6 October 2103

Venue: Kaizer Sebothelo stadium

Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns will meet in the last 16 for a repeat of last year’s Telkom Knockout final on Sunday at the Kaizr Sebothelo stadium.

Celtic come into the game off the back of successive draws against Kaizer Chiefs and Black Aces in the league. They have won just one match so far this season.

Sundowns, in contrast, are unbeaten in the league and recorded an impressive 2-1 home win over Bidvest Wits last time out.

Celtic enjoyed a glorious run to the Telkom Knockout title last season, defeating Chippa United, Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars and Sundowns en-route to lifting the trophy.

Winning the tournament last year was Celtic’s best achievement in the Telkom Knockout era and League Cup history overall, as they had never previously even reached the final.

Sundowns eliminated University of Pretoria, AmaZulu and SuperSport United in last year’s Telkom Knockout, but tasted bitter defeat in the final against Celtic.

The Brazilians have twice reached the final in the Telkom Knockout era (2007/08 & 2012/13), but failed to claim the trophy on either occasion.

In head-to-head stats, Celtic and Sundowns have met in 10 cup clashes since 1985.

The Brazilians have claimed seven wins compared to just three for Phunya Sele Sele.

However, it was the team from Bloemfontein who had the last laugh in the teams’ most recent cup clash, which happened to be in the final of last season’s Telkom Knockout.

Celtic won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Botswana attacker Joel Mogorosi, sealing their first Telkom Knockout title and a first cup win over ‘Downs in the 21st century.

Overall, the teams have clashed in 61 matches across all competitions since 1985.

Sundowns have won more than twice as often as Celtic in the rivalry, recording 32 wins to 14. The teams have drawn 15 times, but never in a cup game.

The teams have already met once this season and it was ‘Downs who emerged victorious, winning 3-1 in Bloemfontein on the opening weekend of the league season.

Here is how they line up.

Celtic: Patrick Tignyemb, Limbikani Mzava, Clayton Daniels, Thabo Nthethe, Tumelo Mogapi, Joel Mogorosi, John Arwuah, Keagan Buchanan, Lyle Lakay, Lerato Manzini, Ruzaigh Gamilden

Sundowns: Kennedy Mweene, Bryce Moon, Wayne Arendse, Alje Schut, Tebogo Langerman, Anthony Laffor, Hlompho Kekana, Bongani Zungu, Khama Billiat, Dove Wome, Cuthbert Malajila
