Stars Punish Sloppy Students

MTN8 Semi-Final First-Leg

Result: P Stars 4-2 Wits

Date: 25 August 2013

Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium

Platinum Stars and Wits slapped in the goals in the second-half as Dikwena claimed a 4-2 win over the Clever Boys in their MTN semi-final first-leg on Sunday.

Both sides looked for an attacking start, and just three minutes in Stars saw Tintswalo Tshabalala power down the flank before seeing his cross cleared by the Clever Boys.

Wits responded with three corners and a flick back into the area from one of those required quick reactions from Siyabonga Mpontshane who slapped the ball behind on the dive.

Dikwena suffered a blow in the 10th minute when Solomon Mathe landed awkwardly on the pitch and after some treatment he had to come off - being replaced by Sibusiso Msomi.

During that time, Papy Faty had a superb chance to put the visitors in the lead but he nodded wide off of a terrific cross from Ryan Chapman.

Stars then cranked up the pressure with Mogakolodi Ngele hitting the crossbar with a shot before Moeneeb Josephs reacted brilliantly to deal with Thabani Mthembu's shot on the follow-up from close range.

Benson Mhlongo was off target in the 19th minute from a corner while Lindokuhle Mbatha rifled a shot wide three minutes later after more good work from the hosts.

The game became bogged down in the middle of the park but it would take a superb piece of defending to stop Ngele from converting Mabtha's low cross.

Wits would end the half with two more chances but Sibusiso Vilakazi fired straight at the goalkeeper while Faty nodded another decent opportunity wide as the deadlock remained.

The second-half exploded into life just three minutes in when Chapman produced a clinical finish after being given far too much space to get a shot off from a fairly tight angle.

The goal seemed to get Stars going though and just eight minutes later the game was level when the Wits defence was ripped apart and Mthembu was on hand to fire home.

Stars now had their tails up and in the 63rd minute Ngele beat the offside trap to run on to a superb througball and gave Moeneeb Josephs no chance.

Mthembu was given his second of the afternoon after capitalising on a mistake from Tinashe Nengomasha and he ran in on goal easily to make it 3-1.

Wits were falling apart and moments later Henrico Botes was celebrating as he was played in by Vuyo Mere and the Namibia international slid a cool finish past the on-rushing Josephs.

The Clever Boys managed to stop the rot with seven minutes to go when Getaneh Kebede produced a clever backheel finish off of a cross from Matthew Booth, who had been sent forward.

Stars will be pleased with the win, but the second goal late on will keep Wits in the game as they host the second-leg of the semi-final.
