With the first competitive Soweto derby of the season set to take place this weekend, Soccer-Laduma analyses what will be a key battle in the outing between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
Using Soccer-Laduma stats from the 2012/13 campaign, the Siya crew took a closer look at who will come up against who on Saturday afternoon.
A key battle at FNB Stadium will be between Chiefs centre back, Erick Mathoho, and Pirates striker, Lennox Bacela.
Mathoho v Bacela
Mathoho has been in fantastic form for Kaizer Chiefs since joining from Bloemfontein Celtic at the start of their last campaign and has once again begun well this time around, getting on the scoresheet in the first round of the MTN8 this season.
Meanwhile, Bacela has adapted to life with Orlando Pirates extremely quickly, grabbing three goals in his last two games, helping the Buccaneers demolish Zamalek in the CAF Champions League last weekend. The forward had his doubters when he moved to Parktown but he’s been silencing them so far.
Average tackles – 2.52
Average interceptions – 19.3
Clearances – 5.78

Verdict: It’s going to be an interesting battle between to Mathoho and Bacela this weekend. Both are strong, good in the air and on form at present, the Pirates striker could be a handful for the Amakhosi centre back.
