Bucs Star Dropped, Chiefs Duo Called Up For Zimbabwe

An Orlando Pirates star has been dropped, while a Kaizer Chiefs duo has retained their place in the latest Zimbabwe’s senior national team squad.

Coach Sunday Chidzambwa called up two players from Pirates in Marshall Munetsi and Kudakwashe Mahachi, while Khama Billiat and Teenage Hadebe were selected from Kaizer Chiefs and included in the previous Warriors squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville earlier this month.

With Zimbabwe scheduled to play back-to-back AFCON qualifiers against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on October 13 and 16 respectively, Mahachi has been dropped from the latest squad announced by Chidzambwa.

Mahachi has been struggling for game-time at Pirates in his first season with the club. So far, Mahachi has made only two substitute appearances in Bucs’ 2018/19 Absa Premiership campaign which were from the first two matches of the season.

While Munetsi has also been struggling for game-time at Bucs this season, as he has made only two starts from eight league matches played by the team to date, the 22-year-old has made into Zimbabwe’s latest squad.

George Chigova (Polokwane City), Edmore Sibanda (Witbank Spurs), Divine Lunga (Golden Arrows), Ronald Pfumbidzai (Bloemfontein Celtic), Eric Chipeta (Cape Umoya United), Danny Phiri (Golden Arrows), Ovidy Karuru (AmaZulu), Talent Chawapiwa (Baroka), Evans Rusike (SuperSport United) and Knox Mutizwa (Golden Arrows) are the other South African-based players named in the squad.

The first of the two matches for Zimbabwe is scheduled to be played in DR Congo, with the return leg set to be in Harare.
