Stuart Baxter previously outlined what he thinks a new coach needs to know before taking on the responsibility of coaching Kaizer Chiefs. Does Giovanni Solinas fit Baxter's criteria?
“I think when clubs choose their coaches, many times they don’t think, is that a coach that can coach this club? they ask, is that a good coach?” Baxter, who led Chiefs to title glory during his time at the club, told Y2Tv in July.
Amakhosi appointed former Free State Stars head coach, Solinas, a week later, with the Italian facing a challenging task ahead of him after three seasons without success.
“And I think the coach needs to ask himself; can I deal with the pressure? Can I produce a brand of football that the people want to see and can I win things? Don’t just think can I pick up that cheque at the end of the month because that’s doomed to failure and the club needs to look at the same thing,” Baxter added at the time.
Solinas has secured the team's semi-final berth in the MTN8, while playing to one loss and two draws in the Absa Premiership so far in the 2018/19 campaign.
The fans also seem to be happy with Chiefs’ new style of play, having displayed more attacking intent this season, with the addition of Khama Billiat playing a big role.
In addition Baxter emphasized that the coach will need to deal with the pressure. he added, “Is this coach one that will handle the pressure, will handle the big players, will be able to produce younger players, will he be able to give us trophies.”
There are high expectations for any coach to come in and lead the Soweto giants and it remains to be seen whether Solinas will eventually find a formula to take Amakhosi back to their cup winning days.
