Soccer-Laduma’s Top 6 PSL Games This Season, So Far…

After much deliberation, the Siya crew have settled on our picks for the top six games of the PSL season so far.

Over the last week, each Soccer-Laduma journalist has had a look back over the last few months to pick out three results related to the teams that they cover and chosen their top three.

To end 2013, we have selected our favourite clashes in the league so far, let us know yours in the comments section below:

Orlando Pirates 0-1 AmaZulu – 8 August 2013 – FNB Stadium

In the first game of the season for a Pirates team that had been flying high in the CAF Champions League, they were brought back down to earth by an AmaZulu outfit determined to enjoy a better campaign. Usuthu had come into the season off of a morale-boosting win over visiting English Premier League side Manchester City, and a goal from former Bucs player, Bongani Ndulula, was enough to sink the Sea Robbers.

SuperSport United 3-1 Kaizer Chiefs – 31 August 2013 – Lucas Moripe Stadium

With Cavin Johnson on board and Matsatsantsa starting their season well, they had a point to prove against the defending league champions and they did so with aplomb. Bernard Parker opened the scoring for Amakhosi, but a brilliant second-half display saw SuperSport strike through Enocent Mkhabela, Bennett Chenene and Bradley Grobler to secure their place at the top of the table at the time.

Mamelodi Sundowns 7-1 AmaZulu – 22 October 2013 – Loftus Stadium

Pitso Mosimane had the Sundowns juggernaut steaming forward on a mission and AmaZulu would feel the full force of his expensively assembled squad on a Tuesday evening late in October. Hlompho Kekana, Cuthbert Malajila and Dove Wome got a goal each while Katlego Mashego netted a brace – as did the out-of-favour Katlego Mphela. The win kept Sundowns’ unbeaten start intact and also steered them back to the summit then.

Polokwane City 1-0 Mamelodi Sundowns – 26 October 2013 – Peter Mokaba Stadium

Just four days after dismantling Usuthu, the Brazilians were expected to pile misery on minnows Polokwane City. 'Rise and Shine' were armed with pins though, deflating heads at will as they secured a brave 1-0 win over the PSL giants. Tebogo Langerman was credited with an own goal – which proved to be enough for the hosts and reminded Sundowns that there is no such thing as an easy game in the top-flight.

Platinum Stars 0-3 Orlando Pirates – 16 December 2013

The Sea Robbers were in desperate need of a result – especially against a team that they had finished second-best against in both the Telkom Knockout and MTN8 finals. Having lost out in the CAF Champions League between those two competitions, nothing but a win would be good enough and Pirates produced a sublime display. Thandani Ntshumayelo, Oupa Manyisa and Daine Klate scored, but there could have been more as Kermit Erasmus was running riot and Dikwena struggled to cope. Stars’ cup run could have taken a lot out of the team one could say, but take nothing away from what was an emphatic showing from Pirates at a crucial stage of the season – where games were set to come thick and fast.

AmaZulu 1-4 Kaizer Chiefs – 22 December 2013 – Moses Mabhida Stadium

Chiefs may not have always been at the slick-passing best so far this season, but they picked up vital points throughout the opening half of the season and finished 2013 on a high. Arguably their most impressive league performance came in their final game before the festive break as they brushed Usuthu aside thanks to goals from Siyabonga Nkosi (brace), Knowledge Musona and Bernard Parker. Khulegani Madondo scored a late consolation goal for the Durban side.
