Following Benni McCarthy’s retirement yesterday, the Siya crew went around the Soccer-Laduma offices to find out the company’s favourite Benni moments. Now it’s your turn!
McCarthy, Bafana Bafana’s all-time top goal scorer, retired having won three league titles in three different countries and is the only South African to win the UEFA Champions League.
We shouted out in the office what everyone’s favourite memories of Benni were, and this is the response we got.
Peter du Toit – I can’t pick one. It’s either when he came on as a substitute in the Champions League final or when he scored two goals against Arrows to help win the league for Pirates in 2012.
Masebe Qina – My favourite Benni moment was when he scored four goals past Namibia in the 1998 Afcon.
Jared Chaitowitz – Scoring the twice against Manchester United to knock them out of the Champions League was probably my favourite moment.
Joe Crann – For me, I think Benni’s free kick against Swallows the season before last. Possibly one of the best free kicks that I’ve ever seen.
Lunga Adam – Definitely the four goals against Namibia! Who can forget that?
Khaya Ndubane – I’d also have to go with the four goals against Namibia in the ’98 Afcon. He was amazing in that tournament.
Julian Bailey – It’s got to be when he stuck the ball between Peter Schmeichel’s legs in the 1998 World Cup in France. I’ll always remember that.
Now it’s your turn to send in your favourite Benni moments. The best will make it into next week’s issue of Soccer-Laduma!
