Platinum Stars goalkeeper, Siyabonga Mpontshane, set a new club record in the 1-0 defeat against Bloemfontein Celtic this week.
Mpontshane, who has been a regular feature in Allan Freese’s side, made his 36th start against Celtic, breaking the record of 34 games that was set by Edward Williams back in the 2003/04 season.
Defender, Tshepo Gumede, also went on to pass Williams during the 1-0 loss to Wits last night, starting his 35th game, but remains one game behind Mpontshane in the club’s record books.
Mpontshane, if given the chance to start all of Dikwena’s remaining games, could hit the 40-mark for the club, an impressive feat given that Stars have picked up both the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout trophies this season.
However, should the ‘keeper face suspension or injury, then Gumede could take his place as the record-holder for most starts in a Platinum Stars jersey throughout the course of a single season.
